Slope Protection Works for the Design & Construction of Yiti Internal Roads at Al Husn

Stabilizing Urban Slopes to Support Safe and Sustainable Road Development

The development of internal roads at Al Husn, Yiti required extensive slope protection works due to the presence of cut slopes formed during excavation. These slopes exhibited a combination of loose surface material, fractured rock zones, and varying stability conditions across a relatively compact urban footprint.
TEICO delivered a comprehensive slope protection solution, combining surface preparation, containment systems, structural reinforcement, and rockfall interception to ensure long-term slope performance and road safety.

Project Overview

The project involved stabilizing multiple slope sections created during the construction of internal roads within the Al Husn development. Due to variable rock quality and slope geometry, a range of protection systems were applied to address site-specific stability requirements.

Challenges Identified

  • Cut Slopes with Loose Surface MaterialExcavation exposed weathered rock and soil requiring extensive cleaning and scaling.
  • Highly Variable Rock ConditionsStability requirements varied significantly across short distances, necessitating multiple protection systems.
  • Localized Rockfall Risk Near Internal RoadsCertain sections posed a direct risk to road users and adjacent infrastructure.
  • Limited Working Space in an Urban SettingWorks had to be executed safely and efficiently within a constrained development area.

Solution Implemented:

1. Cleaning and Scaling Operations
  • Executed 18,184 m² of cleaning and scaling to remove loose rock and unstable material prior to protection works.
2. Wire Mesh Surface Containment
  • Installed simple wire mesh in low-risk areas to control minor raveling.
  • Applied reinforced wire mesh (6 × 6 m and 3 × 3 m) in higher-risk zones to provide stronger surface confinement.
3. Cable Netting for Enhanced Containment
  • Installed 162 m² of cable netting where larger fractured blocks required higher load capacity.
4. Rock Dowels for Structural Reinforcement
  • Installed 628 linear meters of rock dowels to consolidate fractured zones and improve slope integrity.
5. Rockfall Barrier Installation
  • Installed 320 m² of 1,500 kJ rockfall barrier to intercept falling rocks in critical hazard zones.
6. Shotcrete Application
  • Applied 576 m² of shotcrete to stabilize highly weathered surfaces and protect against erosion.

Project Outcomes: Slope Protection Works for the Design & Construction of Yiti Internal Roads at Al Husn

Comprehensive Stabilization Across Variable Slopes

The combined use of scaling, mesh systems, dowels, shotcrete, and rockfall barriers delivered consistent stability across diverse slope conditions.

Improved Safety for Internal Road Users

Rockfall and surface instability risks were significantly reduced, ensuring safe daily use of the internal road network.

Tailored Engineering Solutions for Urban Terrain

Each slope section received protection aligned with its specific geotechnical requirements, optimizing performance and material use.

Durable, Low-Maintenance Slope Systems

The installed systems provide long-term resilience with minimal intervention, supporting sustainable urban infrastructure.

Enhanced Reliability of the Al Husn Road Network

Stabilized slopes contribute to uninterrupted access and long-term serviceability of the internal roads.
