Slope Protection Works for the Wadi Adai Interchange

Stabilizing Critical Cut Slopes for a Major Urban Interchange in Muscat

The Wadi Adai Interchange is a key junction connecting several high-traffic corridors within Muscat. The construction of ramps and approach roads required extensive excavation through steep and fractured terrain, creating new rock faces with potential instability.
To safeguard the interchange and ensure long-term performance, engineered slope protection works were essential.
TEICO delivered a reinforced mesh containment system designed to control surface instability, prevent rockfall, and support safe operation of the newly built interchange.

Project Overview

The project focused on stabilizing newly exposed slopes formed during the development of the Wadi Adai Interchange road network. These slopes exhibited weathering, surface erosion risk, and localized fractured sections—conditions requiring reliable slope protection to ensure safety for motorists.

Project Details

  • Project: Wadi Adai Interchange – Slope Protection Works
  • Location: Wadi Adai, Muscat, Sultanate of Oman
  • Client: Muscat Municipality – Sultanate of Oman
  • Scope: Slope Protection
  • Quantities Delivered:
    • 10,000 m² of Reinforced Wire Mesh
Slope Protection Works for the Wadi Adai Interchange

Challenges Identified

  • Freshly Cut Slopes Susceptible to RavelingExcavation exposed loose rock fragments and weathered layers prone to detachment.
  • Irregular Rock ProfilesUneven surfaces and variable rock conditions required a protection system capable of closely conforming to complex slope geometry.
  • Risk of Falling Debris on Interchange TrafficWith multiple ramp connections and traffic movements below, even minor rockfall events posed operational risks.

Solution Implemented:

1. Reinforced Wire Mesh Containment
  • Installed 10,000 m² of reinforced wire mesh to secure weathered and fractured rock across the slope face.
  • The mesh system provided continuous surface confinement, reducing raveling and preventing loose blocks from reaching the roadway.
2. Anchorage and Edge Securing
  • Mesh was anchored according to the geotechnical layout to maintain tight slope conformity and ensure long-term performance.
3. Surface Preparation and Scaling
  • Removed loose blocks and cleaned the slope prior to installation to enhance system effectiveness and reduce hazards.
4. Integrated Slope Protection Approach
  • The system provided a balance of containment, durability, and adaptability to the interchange's varied terrains.

Project Outcomes: Slope Protection Works for the Wadi Adai Interchange

Stable and Protected Cut Slopes

The reinforced mesh system effectively controlled surface instability and secured loose material across the newly formed slopes.

Improved Safety for Motorists and Infrastructure

With rockfall risks significantly reduced, the interchange operates safely and reliably under heavy traffic loads.

Durable Long-Term Protection

Wire mesh materials were selected for longevity, ensuring resistance to weather exposure and reducing future maintenance needs.

A System Tailored to Complex Urban Terrain

The solution matched the geometry and geotechnical characteristics of each slope section, delivering consistent performance throughout the interchange.
