Stabilizing Steep Cut Slopes Along a Key Mountain Link in Muscat

The Wadi Adai – Al Amerat Road is one of Muscat's most important mountain corridors, connecting dense residential zones to the city's interior districts. Phase 1 involved extensive rock cutting through steep and fractured terrain, creating new slope faces that required engineered protection and consolidation.
TEICO delivered a complete slope protection system combining mesh containment and structural rock reinforcement to secure the newly formed cut slopes and ensure long-term roadway safety.

Project Overview

The project addressed slope stability challenges created during the first phase of road construction. Extensive excavation exposed weathered rock layers, shallow instability zones, and loose blocks that required systematic stabilization.
Mesh coverage and structural anchoring were combined to deliver reliable containment and improve the overall integrity of the slopes.

Project Details

  • Project: Construction of Wadi Adai – Al Amerat Road (Phase 1)
  • Location: Wadi Adai – Al Amerat Corridor, Muscat, Sultanate of Oman
  • Client: Muscat Municipality – Sultanate of Oman
  • Scope: Slope Protection & Consolidation Works
  • Quantities Delivered:
    • 72,500 m² of Reinforced Mesh
    • 1,250 m of Rock Dowels / Anchors
Slope Protection & Consolidation Works for the Wadi Adai – Al Amerat Road (Phase 1)

Challenges Identified

  • Newly Exposed Rock Faces with Surface InstabilityExcavation revealed weathered layers and loose fragments prone to raveling and surface movement.
  • Irregular and Fractured Rock MassGeological discontinuities and variable rock quality required a stabilization system that could conform to and secure uneven surfaces.
  • Potential for Localized Rockfall onto Traffic LanesHigh-slope angles increased the risk of block detachment during and after construction.
  • Long, Continuous Cut SlopesLarge coverage areas demanded uniform containment to prevent progressive failures.

Solution Implemented:

1. Reinforced Mesh Installation
  • Applied 72,500 m² of reinforced wire mesh to provide surface containment across the newly formed slopes.
  • The mesh conformed tightly to the rock face, preventing raveling and controlling small block movement.
2. Rock Dowels & Anchors
  • Installed 1,250 m of rock dowels/anchors to strengthen fractured or unstable zones.
  • Anchors provided mechanical reinforcement by tying potentially unstable rock layers back into competent mass.
3. Integrated Slope Consolidation
  • Combined mesh containment with targeted reinforcement to create a composite stabilization system.
  • Edge treatments and anchorage systems ensured full continuity of coverage.

Project Outcomes: Slope Protection & Consolidation Works for the Wadi Adai – Al Amerat Road (Phase 1)

Secure and Stable Cut Slopes

The integrated mesh-and-anchor system stabilized weathered and fractured rock surfaces, reducing rockfall risks along the road corridor.

Reliable Protection for a Major Mountain Route

The works ensure safe, predictable slope behavior for motorists traveling between Wadi Adai and Al Amerat.

Improved Long-Term Durability

Structural anchoring reinforced deeper instability zones, while mesh provided durable surface retention.

Adapted to Terrain and Rock Conditions

The system was tailored to match each slope's geometry and geotechnical characteristics, ensuring consistent performance across variable terrain.

Foundation for Future Phases of Road Expansion

The stabilized slopes support the long-term development of the corridor and reduce maintenance needs for the municipality.
