Slope Protection Works for the Tawaian-Dibba Highway

Enhancing Slope Stability Along a Mountain Highway Linking Key Communities

The Tawaian-Dibba Highway cuts through steep, weathered mountain terrain where exposed rock face and slope erosion pose long-term safety concerns. To secure the roadway and prevent surface degradation, engineered slope protection measures were required across multiple high-elevation sections.
TEICO delivered a tailored combination of shotcrete systems designed to stabilize the slope faces, prevent surface erosion, and improve the long-term performance of this important UAE transport link.

Project Overview

The project involved stabilizing steep cut slopes along the Tawaian-Dibba corridor, where natural weathering and surface erosion posed risks to the roadway. A mix of fiber-reinforced shotcrete and welded-mesh-reinforced shotcrete was applied to consolidate the rock face and ensure durable slope protection.

Project Details

  • Project: Slope Protection Works - Tawaian to Dibba Highway
  • Location: Tawaian-Dibba Corridor, United Arab Emirates
  • Client: Ministry of Public Works (UAE)
  • Scope: Slope Protection Works
  • Quantities Delivered:
    • 5,000 m² Fiber-Reinforced Shotcrete
    • 1,000 m² Shotcrete with Welded Mesh
Slope Protection Works for the Tawaian-Dibba Highway

Challenges Identified

  • Weathered and Weak Surface LayersExposed rock showed signs of flaking, softening, and surface instability caused by environmental exposure.
  • Irregular and Steep Rock ProfilesUneven slope geometry required flexible stabilization solutions capable of conforming to complex surfaces.
  • Risk of Surface Erosion and Material LossRainfall, runoff, and thermal cycling accelerated erosion along exposed faces.
  • Limited Access for Conventional EquipmentCertain slope areas required controlled work-at-height methods for shotcrete application and mesh placement.

Solution Implemented:

1. Fiber-Reinforced Shotcrete Application
  • Applied 5,000 m² of fiber-reinforced shotcrete to stabilize weathered surfaces and control surface erosion.
  • Fibers improved tensile capacity and crack resistance, ideal for large coverage areas.
2. Welded Mesh Reinforcement
  • Installed 1,000 m² of welded mesh prior to shotcreting in higher-risk zones.
  • The mesh provided additional structural support and improved shotcrete bonding across fractured surfaces.
3. Surface Preparation & Stabilization
  • Scaled loose blocks and cleaned rock faces prior to application to ensure proper adhesion and long-term durability.
4. Controlled Application in Steep Areas
  • Used rope-access and elevated platforms to execute precise shotcrete works across steep and irregular slope faces.

Project Outcomes: Slope Protection Works for the Tawaian-Dibba Highway

Stabilized and Reinforced Rock Faces

Shotcrete systems consolidated weathered surface layers, reducing the risk of detachment or progressive instability.

Improved Long-Term Erosion Resistance

Fiber shotcrete and welded-mesh-reinforced zones now act as durable barriers against rainfall, runoff, and climatic exposure.

Enhanced Roadway Safety for Motorists

The treated slopes significantly reduce hazards to road users, supporting safe and reliable travel along the mountain corridor.

Slope Protection Tailored to Variable Ground Conditions

Combining two shotcrete systems allowed solutions to be matched to each slope's stability needs and structural demands.

Durable Performance with Low Maintenance Requirements

The installed systems deliver long-term protection with minimal intervention, supporting sustainable infrastructure performance.
