Project We Are Proud Of
Slope Protection Works for the Additional Third & Fourth Lanes of the Rusayl-Nizwa Dual Road

Stabilizing Expanded Highway Cut Slopes Along One of Oman's Busiest Transport Corridors
The expansion of the Rusayl-Nizwa Dual Road—adding the third and fourth lanes—required significant slope protection works across newly widened cuttings. These slopes, formed during the road widening process, exposed weathered rock faces and loose materials that posed a risk to traffic on one of Oman's major arterial highways.
TEICO delivered engineered slope stabilization measures using reinforced wire mesh and cable netting systems to secure the cut faces and ensure long-term safety for road users.
Project Overview
The project involved stabilizing multiple slope sections along the upgraded highway. With the addition of new lanes, excavation exposed variable rock conditions that required a combination of containment and consolidation measures.
Project Details
- Location: Rusayl to Nizwa Corridor, Sultanate of Oman
- Client: Sultanate of Oman, Ministry of Transport & Communications, Directorate General of Roads & Land Transport
- Scope: Slope Protection
- Systems Installed:
- Reinforced Wire Mesh
- Cable Netting

Challenges Identified
- Newly Exposed Rock Faces from Widening WorksExcavation for additional lanes created fresh cut slopes with loose surface material and weathered rock layers.
- Irregular and Fractured Slope ProfilesVariability in rock quality required adaptable stabilization methods across different sections.
- Risk of Localized Rockfall onto Live TrafficProximity to active lanes required immediate and reliable containment to protect road users.
- Long, Continuous Cuts with Progressive Instability PotentialLarge slope lengths increased the chance that minor detachments could propagate if left untreated.
Solution Implemented:
1. Reinforced Wire Mesh Installation
- •Applied reinforced wire mesh to stabilize weathered and unstable areas.
- •Provided close-contact containment to control raveling and restrict small block movement.
2. Cable Netting for Higher-Risk Zones
- •Installed cable netting where larger fractured blocks required higher load capacity and enhanced system rigidity.
- •The cable network ensured effective coverage across irregular slope surfaces.
3. Integrated Stabilization Approach
- •Combined mesh and netting systems to match the varying geotechnical conditions along the corridor.
- •Enhanced anchorage and edge treatments ensured long-term system performance.
Project Outcomes: Slope Protection Works for the Additional Third & Fourth Lanes of the Rusayl-Nizwa Dual Road
Safer and More Reliable Highway Slopes
Stabilization measures significantly reduced rockfall risks, supporting uninterrupted traffic movement on a major national roadway.
Effective Containment of Weathered and Loose Material
Reinforced mesh and cable netting systems secured fractured surfaces and prevented progressive raveling.
Improved Performance Across Variable Terrain
The dual-system approach allowed precise adaptation to different slope conditions formed during widening.
Long-Term Stability with Minimal Disruption
The stabilization works provide sustainable protection and require minimal future intervention, supporting the road's long-term operational safety.
