Securing Steep Mountain Slopes Along a Strategic National Highway

The Dubai-Fujairah Freeway traverses rugged mountain terrain where steep rock cuttings and fractured slopes pose ongoing rockfall and stability risks. To ensure the long-term safety of this critical transport corridor, comprehensive slope protection and consolidation works were required across multiple high-risk sections.
TEICO delivered an integrated rock stabilization solution combining surface containment, rockfall interception, and structural consolidation—executed under challenging access and elevation conditions.

Project Overview

The project involved treatment and stabilization of steep rock slopes directly adjacent to the freeway. These slopes exhibited weathered surfaces, loosened rock blocks, and potential for high-energy rockfall events.
The scope included both surface stabilization and rockfall protection to safeguard road users and infrastructure.

Challenges Identified

  • Steep, High-Elevation Rock FacesMany slope sections were located at extreme heights with limited ground access, requiring specialized work-at-height methods.
  • Loose and Weathered Rock MassFractured rock and unstable boulders created a continuous risk of rockfall onto the freeway.
  • Potential for High-Energy Rockfall EventsThe slope geometry and elevation demanded protection systems capable of intercepting falling rocks before reaching traffic lanes.
  • Restricted Access for Equipment and InstallationConventional drilling and installation equipment could not be deployed in several sections, necessitating alternative access solutions.

Solution Implemented:

1. Scaling and Boulder Removal
  • Performed controlled scaling and removal of loose boulders using specialized climbers operating at high elevation.
2. Reinforced Wire Mesh Installation
  • Installed 4,000 m² of reinforced wire mesh to provide surface confinement and prevent raveling of loosened rock fragments.
3. Rockfall Barrier System
  • Installed 12,000 m² of rockfall barrier to intercept falling rocks and protect the freeway from high-energy impacts.
4. Specialized Drilling Operations
  • Executed drilling using saddle systems and rigs mounted on baskets to safely access steep and irregular rock faces.
