Slope Protection Works for the Dualisation of Bausher - Al Amerat Road (Phase 2)

Ensuring Safe Slope Conditions for One of Oman's Steepest Urban Corridors

The Phase 2 dualisation of the Bausher-Al Amerat Road required extensive slope protection works across steep, high-elevation cut slopes. With continuous rockfall exposure and heavily fractured surfaces, the project demanded a reliable stabilization system to safeguard motorists and maintain uninterrupted traffic flow.
Between December 2011 and August 2012, TEICO delivered a complete slope protection package, combining reinforced mesh installation and structural anchoring across multiple cut faces.

Project Overview

Located within one of Muscat's most challenging terrains, the project involved stabilizing steep rock cuts immediately beside the new dual carriageway. Works included slope cleaning, boulder removal, rock dowel installation, and mesh placement to ensure long-term stability in a highly exposed mountain corridor.
To address these concerns, the client requested a full evaluation to determine the current stability state, identify potential failure modes, and outline a reliable, cost-effective protection strategy.

Project Details

  • Project: Dualisation of Bausher - Al Amerat Road (Phase 2)
  • Client: Sultanate of Oman - Muscat Municipality
  • Scope: Slope Protection
  • Quantities Executed:
    • 33,000 m² Reinforced Mesh
    • 2,500 m Rock Dowels
Slope Protection Works for the Dualisation of Bausher - Al Amerat Road (Phase 2)

Challenges Identified

  • Steep, High-Elevation Rock CutsMany sections required specialized access methods and safe work-at-height procedures.
  • Unstable Boulders and Loose RockLarge boulders and weathered zones posed immediate rockfall hazards during excavation and installation.
  • Variable Rock Mass ConditionsJointed and fractured formations demanded careful assessment to ensure effective placement of dowels and mesh.
  • Traffic Adjacent Work ZonesConstruction activities occurred close to active road sections, requiring controlled execution and coordination.

Solution Implemented:

1. Removal of Unstable Boulders
  • Used hydraulic jacks and controlled techniques to safely dislodge and remove hazardous boulders.
2. Drilling and Rock Dowel Installation
  • Installed 2,500 m of rock dowels to consolidate fractured layers and improve slope integrity.
3. Scaling and Surface Preparation
  • Conducted thorough scaling to remove loose debris and create a stable surface for mesh application.
4. Placement of Reinforced Mesh
  • Applied 33,000 m² of reinforced mesh across slope faces to contain loose material and prevent rockfall.

Project Outcomes: Slope Protection Works for Bausher - Al Amerat Road

Reliable Long-Term Slope Stability

The combination of dowels and reinforced mesh significantly improved the structural integrity of cut faces, reducing rockfall risks along the corridor.

Safer Travel Through a High-Risk Terrain

Stabilized slopes now protect motorists from falling debris, enhancing road safety for daily commuters and long-distance travelers.

Efficient Execution on Steep Terrain

Despite the demanding elevation and rock geometry, drilling, scaling, and mesh placement were executed safely and efficiently using controlled techniques.

Strengthened Mountain Corridor for Urban Growth

The slope protection works support the long-term reliability of one of Muscat’s key mountain routes, improving connectivity between Bausher and Al Amerat.

Minimized Disruption to Road Development

Stabilization works progressed in parallel with road construction, supporting the contractor’s programme and keeping the dualisation on schedule.
