Slope Protection Works for the Dualisation of Bausher - Al Amerat Road (Phase 1)

Stabilizing Steep Mountain Slopes for One of Muscat's Most Critical Road Links

The Phase 1 dualisation of the Bausher-Al Amerat Road required slope protection across extremely steep and inaccessible rock faces. With no safe ground access for conventional equipment, TEICO executed a specialized installation program using helicopter transport, manual drilling, and controlled mesh placement.
The result is a secure mountain corridor that supports one of Muscat's most important urban connections, improving long-term safety and slope performance.

Project Overview

The project involved stabilizing steep cut slopes along the Bausher-Al Amerat route, where fractured rock formations and high-gradient faces required a targeted slope protection system.
TEICO installed 27,400 m² of wire mesh, reinforced through rock dowels and validated by pull-out testing to ensure performance under long-term load conditions.

Project Details

  • Project: Dualisation of Bausher - Al Amerat Road (Phase 1)

Challenges Identified

  • Extremely Steep, Inaccessible SlopesCertain faces could not be reached by conventional equipment, requiring aerial material delivery.
  • Highly Fractured Rock MassLoose and jointed rock zones increased the risk of rockfall during and after construction.
  • Manual, Rope-Access Drilling RequirementsDrilling operations had to be executed entirely at height, demanding specialized safety procedures.
  • Verification of Anchor PerformancePull-out testing was essential to confirm load capacity before mesh installation.

Solution Implemented:

1. Aerial Delivery of Mesh Rolls
  • Transported mesh bundles to high-elevation faces using helicopter lifts to ensure safe and efficient material placement.
2. Manual Drilling on Steep Rock Faces
  • Performed anchor drilling using rope-access techniques across inaccessible slope sections.
3. Installation of High-Strength Wire Mesh
  • Installed 27,400 m² of wire mesh to contain loose blocks and improve surface stability.
4. Pull-Out Testing for Anchor Verification
  • Conducted systematic pull-out tests to confirm anchor capacity and ensure compliance with design requirements.

Project Outcomes: Slope Protection Works for Bausher - Al Amerat Road (Phase 1)

Reliable Slope Stability Across High-Risk Terrain

The combination of deep anchoring and full-face mesh coverage significantly improved the structural stability of steep cut faces along the corridor.

Safe Execution on Slopes with No Ground Access

Helicopter delivery and rope-access drilling ensured safe and controlled installation in areas impossible to reach with ground equipment.

Verified Anchor Performance for Long-Term Reliability

Pull-out testing confirmed proper load transfer, supporting a durable and predictable slope protection system.

Reduced Rockfall Risk for Commuters

The stabilized slopes provide a safer passage for motorists along one of Muscat's busiest and most challenging mountain routes.

Efficient Delivery Under Difficult Geotechnical Conditions

Despite steep geometry and fractured rock mass, the project was completed with high safety standards and precise installation quality.
