Slope Protection for Al Amerat - Quriyat Road Dualisation & Realignment

Project snapshot

Project Details

  • Location: Al Amerat - Quriyat Road, Sultanate of Oman
  • Client: Muscat Municipality, Sultanate of Oman
  • Quantities installed:
169,700 m² of slope protection mesh
    2,650 m of rock dowels / anchors

Project Overview

The dualisation and realignment of the Al Amerat - Quriyat Road required extensive rock cutting through steep terrain. These new cut slopes posed a risk of rockfall and surface instability directly above a busy strategic highway.
TEICO was engaged to provide a complete slope protection and consolidation solution, ensuring long-term stability while allowing the project to progress on programme.
Slope Protection for Al Amerat - Quriyat Road Dualisation & Realignment

Challenges Identified

  • Steep, high rock cuttings immediately adjacent to live traffic
  • Potential for localised rockfall and surface erosion during heavy rain
  • Limited access to the slope faces, requiring safe work at height
  • Need to stabilise large areas within a tight construction schedule

Solution Implemented:

To address these challenges, TEICO designed and implemented a rock slope stabilisation system combining:

  • Installation of rock dowels and anchors to consolidate the rock mass
  • Application of high-strength slope protection mesh over 169,700 m² of face
  • ConstruckSlope Extreme - Installed on steep, highly weathered slopes requiring advanced durability.
  • Integration of steel cables to tension and secure the mesh system to the anchors
  • Comprehensive drilling and pressure grouting to bond anchors and improve overall stability

Project Outcomes: Comprehensive Slope Protection for Al Amerat - Quriyat Road

Secured Long-Term Slope Stability

The combined use of deep rock dowels, anchors, and high-strength mesh established a stable rock mass across steep cut faces, significantly reducing the risk of detachments along a major highway corridor.

Improved Safety for Road Users

With the slopes consolidated and surface erosion controlled, the dual carriageway now operates with reduced rockfall hazards, supporting safer, more reliable travel for commuters.

Efficient Stabilization Across Large Areas

Despite the extensive 169,700 m² coverage, the system allowed uniform protection and predictable performance across varying rock profiles and slope heights.

Enhanced Performance During Rainfall Events

Consolidation of loose zones and full-face mesh coverage minimized surface erosion and reduced the likelihood of localized failures triggered by heavy rain.
